identity

alexis guneratne is a composer, sound artist, and photographer.

Working with field recordings and studio recorded sounds, as well as instrumental performers, he sculpts, layers, and prepares sound for performance, installation, label release, and collaboration.

His background is in electroacoustic and acousmatic music (‘cinema for the ear’), and contemporary instrumental music. His work has been performed throughout the UK (York Late Music Festival, various MANTIS Festivals), and he has performed live using electroacoustics solo (Futuresonic Festival Manchester) and as co-artistic director of KAIROS ensemble (SAN EXPO, Sonorities Festival, Manchester International Festival).

The focus of his work is on emergence and contour, on the vibration in sound between the visceral/physical and the evocative/conceptual; the moment of perception taken as a drifting fissure, relating intentions, materials, and contexts; a work as something still bounded, but only realised through engagement and meeting.

His photographic work shares in his approach to sound and music, and is being developed to become an integral part of his practice.
